Does Oloro Ageless Ascetic's life gain trigger work even when he is in the command zone?

Oloro, Ageless Ascetic has three abilities. His first ability reads: "At the beginning of your upkeep, you gain 2 life." Crucially, Wizards of the Coast deliberately templated this ability so that it functions while Oloro is in the command zone. This is an intentional design decision for Commander and is supported by the card's oracle text, which specifies no zone restriction for that trigger.

Normally, triggered abilities only function on the battlefield (CR 603.6). However, there is an exception: some cards are explicitly written to have abilities that work in other zones, including the command zone (CR 603.6c). Oloro's first ability is one such case — it is designed to trigger from the command zone as part of his flavor and mechanical identity.

His second ability ("Whenever you gain life, you may pay 1 mana to draw a card and each opponent loses 1 life") and his third ability (the upkeep skulk-style effect for opponents) only function while he is on the battlefield, as they carry no special zone language.

Concrete example: Your Oloro deck starts the game. Oloro sits in your command zone and is never cast. At the beginning of each of your upkeeps, you still gain 2 life from his first ability — but since he is not on the battlefield, his second ability does NOT trigger off that life gain, so you draw no cards and opponents lose no life.

This makes Oloro uniquely powerful as a commander you may never need to cast to accrue a life advantage over a long game.
