Rules AnswersLayers & Continuous Effects

What happens when you control two Renaming effects that both change a card's name?

Short answer
Both renaming effects apply in timestamp order; the most recent one determines the card's current name, as only one name can apply at a time.

When two continuous effects both attempt to set a card's name to something specific, they are both 'setting' the same characteristic. Under CR 613.1, continuous effects are applied in a defined order, and effects in the same layer (layer 1 for name changes) that conflict are resolved by timestamp order per CR 613.7.

Because a card can only have one name at a time (or a specific list of names), the effect with the later timestamp wins and determines the card's actual name. The earlier renaming effect is still technically applied first, but the later effect overwrites it. This is analogous to how two 'set power to X' effects interact in layer 7b.

For example, suppose you control an effect that renames your Grizzly Bears to 'Forest' (applied at turn 3), and then a second effect renames it to 'Island' (applied at turn 5). The card's name is currently 'Island' because that effect has the later timestamp. If the second effect ends, the card's name reverts to 'Forest' from the remaining first effect.

If both effects were created simultaneously (same timestamp), they are applied in the order that creates the most logical outcome per CR 613.7b, which in practice means they are treated as having the same timestamp and the game applies them in the order listed, with the last applicable result standing — still resulting in only one name.

Note: Some cards grant multiple names (e.g., they add a name rather than replace). Those effects stack additively rather than overwriting, and both names would apply simultaneously — but pure renaming effects that set a name are mutually overwriting, with the latest timestamp prevailing.
